To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many written questions he or his predecessor answered in each year since 1980.

On a sessional basis, the number of written parliamentary questions answered from 1983–90 is set out in the table. Figures for 1980–82 are not available.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how long on average the Scottish Office takes to reply to parliamentary written questions for(a) priority and (b) ordinary written answers; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Lang

On average, and if the information is readily to hand, my Department replies to priority written questions on the date they are due for answer and to ordinary written questions within one week.
