HC Deb 20 May 1991 vol 191 c357W
Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what is his estimate of the total increased costs to a married couple with two children on average earnings with an average mortgage, of the interest rate rises over the past two years.

Mr. Maude

The monthly interest payment, net of basic rate tax relief, on an average mortgage in May 1989 was £210.94. At the May 1991 interest rate of 12.9 per cent., the payment on that mortgage would be £201.56.
