To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what progress has been made in defining and designing replacement assault ships for HMS Fearless and HMS Intrepid.

My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State confirmed on 25 July 1990 that we intend to retain an amphibious capability. We are considering how best to maintain in the longer term the capability currently provided by the assault ships HMS Fearless and HMS Intrepid.
