HC Deb 14 May 1991 vol 191 cc84-5W
Mr. Andrew Smith

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what central Government funds are allocated for(a) the licensed teacher scheme and (b) the articled teacher scheme in the current financial year, for 1992–93 and 1993–94.

Mr. Fallon

In 1991–92 the Government are supporting expenditure by local education authorities of some £5.5 million on the licensed teacher scheme and £8.0 million on the articled teacher scheme through grants for education support and training—GEST. Grant is paid at a rate of 65 per cent. of expenditure. Funding for the articled teacher scheme is also provided for higher education institutions through the funding councils, but is not separately identified.

The proposals which my right hon. and learned Friend announced on 3 May for GEST programme expenditure in 1992–93 include £10.1 million for the licensed teacher scheme and £11 million for the articled teacher scheme.

No decisions have yet been reached on expenditure in support of the licensed and articled teacher schemes in 1993–94.
