To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what information he has on how many access courses there are in the United Kingdom; what percentage of men and women take part in these courses; and if he will give a breakdown of the percentage of men and women by region.

A survey published by the educational counselling and credit transfer information service listed 522 access courses in England in 1989. Based on information from the "Further Education Statistical Record", 34 per cent. of students enrolled on access courses in England at Novembver 1989 were men and 66 per cent. were women. Percentages by region are:
