§ Sir John WheelerTo ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science how much money, and what percentage of total resources, was spent in the last year for which figures are available by each of the research councils on (a) research into management development,(b) management training and (c) training overall, 318W excluding the employment costs of the trainees; and how the training expenditure is divided between courses provided internally and those provided externally.
§ Mr. Alan HowarthThe details are as follows:
(a) Research into management development
In 1990–91 the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC) made 15 awards totalling £419,000 for research projects into various aspects of management development. This represented 5 per cent. of the total of research grants made in that year.
319W(b) Management training
In 1990–91, the ESRC was supporting 359 students on courses relating to management training at a cost of £1,443,000. This represented some 15 per cent. of the total ESRC expenditure on postgraduate awards.
Expenditure by the research councils on management training of their own staff was as follows:
Agricultural and Food Research Council (AFRC)
In 1990–91 the AFRC spent £70,313 on management training, £60,000 internally and £10,313 on external management courses.
Economic and Social Research Council
In 1990–91 the ESRC spent some £7,000 on management training, of which £700 was spent externally.
Medical Research Council (MRC)
This information (and also at (c) below) is not collected centrally and could only be obtained at disproportionate cost.
Natural Environment Research Council (NERC)
In 1990–91 NERC spent £260,000 on management training, of which £140,000 was spent internally.
Science and Engineering Research Council (SERC)
For the period 1 August 1989 to 31 July 1990, SERC spent £193,000 on management training, all of which was undertaken by the research council's joint training service (JTS).
(c) Training overall
- AFRC's total expenditure on staff training in 1990–91 was £270,133, of which £150,000 was undertaken internally or through the JTS. The total of science budget resources devoted to training was about 0.3 per cent.
- ESRC's total expenditure on staff training in 1990–91 was £32,100 of which £23,000 was undertaken by JTS. This total represents about 0.1 per cent. of the council's resources from the science budget.
- NERC's total expenditure on staff training in 1990–91 was £650,000, of which £220,000 was undertaken internally or by JTS. Total expenditure represented 0.37 per cent. of the council's resources from the science budget.
In the period 1 August 1989 to 31 July 1990, SERC estimates that its total expenditure on staff training amounted to about £707,000. Of this some £420,000 was
