To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment if his Department is(a) currently sponsoring any research and (b) has plans to sponsor future research into methods of the safe destruction and neutralisation of radioactive materials, including wastes.

Mr. Baldry

Research work is currently being carried out into dissolution of plastic materials contaminated with radioactivity. It is likely that the Department of the Environment will continue to fund this work in partnership with industry.

Currently there is no research work being carried out by the Department into the destruction of radioactive materials.
