HL Deb 26 March 1991 vol 527 cc56-7WA
Lord Monson

asked Her Majesty's Government:

In what proportion of countries in (i) the European Community and (ii) the OECD is the wearing of seatbelts compulsory in the rear seats of (i) private cars, (ii) taxis.

The Minister of State, Department of Transport (Lord Brabazon of Tara)

Rear seat belt wearing is compulsory in five European Community countries. No details are available of specific requirements for vehicles used as taxis, nor is up-to-date available about the position in those OECD member states which are not also members of the European Community.
