HC Deb 25 March 1991 vol 188 cc305-6W
Mr. Strang

To ask the Minister of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food what was the number of workers engaged in agriculture in England and the European Community, respectively in 1980, 1985 and 1990,(a) in total and (b) whole time.

Mr. Curry

The information requested for England is provided in the table. For the European Community farm structure surveys recorded the total number of family and regularly employed non-family workers in the EC 10 as follows (millions): 1983, 6.9; 1985, 6.7 and 1987, 6.2; the corresponding figure for EC12 in 1987 was 8.8 million. No reliable analysis of this series distinguishing between full and part-time workers has yet been published, but some details are contained in the Eurostat publication, "Farm Structure, 1987 Survey: main results", a copy of which is in the Library of the House.
