To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list the total value to the Scottish economy of tourism in each of the past 15 years.

Note: Figures are compiled from the International Passenger Survey (for overseas visitors) and the British Tourism Survey, the National Survey of Tourism in Scotland and the United Kingdom Tourism Survey (for domestic visitors for the years 1975–83, 1984–88 and 1989 respectively). Because of differences in the domestic surveys, figures for the period 1975–83 are not directly comparable with those for 1984–89.

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland when his Department last undertook a survey either directly or in conjunction with the Scottish tourist board of the impact of tourism on the Scottish economy.

Mr. Allan Stewart

The Scottish tourist board, as the agency with statutory responsibility for promoting and developing the Scottish tourism industry, undertakes annual surveys into the volume and value of tourism in Scotland.
