HL Deb 14 March 1991 vol 527 c9WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they have studied Miss Vanya Kenley's reports and films of her recent visits to Tibet and her accounts of the widespread use of torture.

The Earl of Caithness:

We are aware of Miss Kewley's film and reports. We deplore human rights abuses wherever they occur. We have, on many occasions, made clear to the Chinese authorities our anxieties about reports of human rights abuses in Tibet.

Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether they will bring the issues of Tibet before the current session of the United Nations Human Rights Commission in Geneva.

The Earl of Caithness:

At the 47th Session of the UN Commission on Human Rights, which ended in Geneva on 7th March, the Presidency, on behalf of the European Community, made a statement calling upon the Chinese authorities to guarantee respect for human rights throughout China, including Tibet.
