HC Deb 14 March 1991 vol 187 cc652-3W
Mr. Corbyn

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many applications for political asylum were received in January and February; from which countries the applicants came; and how many had entered the United Kingdom prior to 31 December 1990.

Mr. Peter Lloyd

[holding answer 12 March 1991]: Reliable estimates of the number of applications for asylum in the United Kingdom in January and February 1991 by nationality and date of arrival are not yet available. However, provisional indications are of a total of more than 3,000 principal applications, excluding associated dependants, in each month. This figure does not include applications for upgrading to refugee status by those previously granted exceptional leave.
