To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many neonatal intensive care cots there are in England.

Neonatal intensive care cots in maternity units are not separately identified in returns submitted to the Department. Of those not in maternity units, 3,496 intensive care cots were in use during 1989–90, of which 865 were in regionally designated intensive care units.
