HC Deb 13 March 1991 vol 187 cc613-9W
Mr. McAllion

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will publish statistics listing the number of homeless applicants and the number of people housed under the homeless persons legislation by each local authority in Scotland in each of the last five years for which statistics are available.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

[holding answer 11 March 1991]: Returns submitted by local authorities to the Scottish Office indicate that the numbers of households applying for help under the homelessness legislation, and the numbers of those households for whom each authority secured permanent accommodation in the years 1985–86 to 1989–90, were as set out in the following table. The figures for 1989–90 are provisional, since returns may still be received from some authorities. In most years, some authorities failed to submit complete returns; the increase in the provisional figures for 1989–90 is in part the result of more comprehensive returns being received from some authorities.

In comparing the figures it should be noted that not all applicant households are found to be homeless. For example in 1989–90, provisional figures for Scotland indicate that 39 per cent. of applicant households were assessed to be homeless; another 23 per cent. were potentially homeless.

The figures given for those found accommodation exclude households for whom authorities secured short-stay accommodation.
