HL Deb 12 March 1991 vol 527 c5WA
Lord Hylton

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What information they have about the capacity for nuclear and chemical war of South Africa, and whether they will list the relevant international conventions already signed by South Africa.

The Minister of State, Foreign and Commonwealth Office (The Earl of Caithness):

We have called upon South Africa on many occasions to submit all its nuclear installations and facilities to IAEA safeguards and to accede to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. South Africa has ratified the Protocol of the Geneva Convention prohibiting the use of chemical and biological weapons in war.
