HC Deb 06 March 1991 vol 187 cc205-6W
24. Mr. McKelvey

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will outline the progress being made in upgrading the A77.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

Considerable progress is being made in upgrading the A77. The Balsalloch-Balcreuchan realignment scheme was completed in December 1990 and the adjoining Benane Hill bypass is at present under construction. Extensive safety fencing work has been undertaken on central reserves. Six further major schemes are in preparation. My right hon. Friend has recently allocated Strathclyde regional council an additional £1.4 million capital consent, to enable the council to make early progress on advance earth works on the local road section of the Ayr road route between the M77 and the Glasgow city boundary.
