11989 figures not available by country

Aid statistics do not identify environmental or income-generating projects and the information requested could not be provided without disproportionate cost to public funds.

Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what percentage of United Kingdom aid flowing to South America is linked to environmental projects.

Mrs. Chalker

Information on aid flows is not available in the form requested.

Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what percentage of United Kingdom aid flowing to Peru is linked to(a) environmental projects and (b) income-generation projects.

Mrs. Chalker

Aid statistics do not separately identify environmental or income-generating projects. The current programme of bilateral assistance to Peru includes support to veterinary services in the south of the country, with the aim of increasing the income of livestock owners. Allocations to this project constitute approximately 25 per cent. of bilateral funds. There are no environmental projects in the current bilateral programme.

Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what was the total level of aid which flowed via the European Commission to(a) South American countries, (b) the Andean group of countries and (c) Peru in each of the last five years.

Mrs. Chalker

Total net official development assistance through the European Commission for the five year period up to 1988, the latest year for which figures are available, was as follows:

£ million
1984 1985 1986 1987 1988
a. South America 20.59 32.58 54.46 41.91 57.53

c. Peru 2.32 3.63 2.87 7.83 8.47

Mr. Sheerman

To ask the Secretary of State for Foreign and Commonwealth Affairs what emergency aid the United Kingdom Government are providing to Peru to combat the outbreak of cholera.

Mrs. Chalker

In response to a request from the Peruvian Government, the Overseas Development Administration made an immediate cash contribution of US$20,000 through the Pan American Health Organisation which is co-ordinating the relief response.

In addition, we are providing US$140,000 as Britain's share of the European Community's emergency aid.
