HC Deb 20 June 1991 vol 193 c262W
Mr. Maclennan

To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment whether the Government considers that Dounreay is a potential site for the underground storage of high level radioactive waste.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

I have been asked to reply.

No work to identify potential sites for disposal of high-level waste has yet commenced. Government policy is that high-level waste should be stored safely for at least 50 years to allow its heat and radioactivity to decay.
