To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what contribution was made by his Department to International Environment Day on 5 June.

[holding answer 14 June 1991]: The Department works constantly to protect and improve the national and international environment. On the day in question my right hon. Friend the Secretary of State was in the United States to discuss environmental issues; my hon. Friend the Minister for the Environment and Countryside addressed the Association of County Councils' environment seminar, announced the Blue Flag awards for 1991, and attended a Tidy Britain Group conference on protection of the coastline; and I visited the London ecology centre.
