HL Deb 19 June 1991 vol 530 cc18-20WA
Earl Russell

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether the starting salary for university lecturers makes its recipients eligible for deferment of student loan repayments, and at what age university lecturers usually reach 85 per cent. of average earnings.

The Minister of State, Department of the Environment (Baroness Blatch)

No. The minimum starting salary for university lecturers is higher than the earnings threshold below which borrowers are entitled to defer repayment of student loans. This deferment threshold is calculated as 85 per cent. of gross average national earnings.
