Mr. Redmond

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence (1) if he will make a statement on the contravention by a jet military aircraft flying at less than 1,000 ft over the village of Thurnscoe, South Yorkshire at approximately 1130 hours on 3 June, of the low flying transit area;

(2) if he will make a statement in respect of the pair of military jet aircraft that flew at less than 1,000 ft between the villages of Clayton and Hooton Pagnell, South Yorkshire at approximately 1655 hours on 22 May;

(3) if he will make a statement in respect of a low-flying military jet aircraft entering a prohibited low-flying transit area over Clayton, South Yorkshire on 9 June at approximately (a) 1509 hours and (b) 1617 hours.

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what were the aims and objectives of the low flying exercise Trident Eagle held in May; what types and numbers of aircraft were involved; how many complaints were received in respect of noise and low flying, and from what locations; and if he will make a statement.

Mr. Kenneth Carlisle

Exercise Trident Eagle was an aviation battlegroup exercise undertaken by 9 Army Air Corps Regiment designed to practise airmobile operations and procedures. The numbers and types of aircraft which took part in the exercise were as follows:

  • Seven Gazelle
  • 12 Lynx
  • Two Puma

Seven complaints were received in all, from the following locations:

  • Horncastle, Lincolnshire
  • Louth, Lincolnshire (two)
  • Rothwell, Lincolnshire
  • Wragby, Lincolnshire
  • Benniworth, Lincolnshire
  • Dunnington, North Yorkshire
