To ask the Secretary of State for Defence if he will list the expenditure covered by his Department's hospitality fund for the financial years(a) 1989–90, (b) 1990–91 and (c) 1991–92 to date.

The amount spent on official hospitality by the Ministry of Defence in 1989–90 totalled some £3.7 million, in 1990–91 £3.9 million, and in 1991–92, to 31 May, £0.4 million. These figures include expenditure incurred by the Ministry of Defence itself, by formations and establishments of the armed forces at home and abroad, and by individual officers occupying command and international appointments for which entertainment allowances are payable.
