HC Deb 18 June 1991 vol 193 c157W
Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence which docks in the United Kingdom have had Z-berth safety assessments produced for them but were subsequently refused Z-berth status by the nuclear powered warships safety committee.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

None. Proposed new Z-berths are put forward to the nuclear-powered warship safety committee only when there is confidence in the berth's suitability.

Dr. Thomas

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence at what dates(a) Cardiff and (b) Barry docks were designated as sites for nuclear powered submarine berths; and how many nuclear-powered submarines have visited the Cardiff and Barry docks to date.

Mr. Archie Hamilton

Z-berths were designated at Cardiff and Barry in 1970 and 1972 respectively. Nuclear-powered submarines have visited Barry on three occasions; visits to Cardiff have been more numerous—typically one or two per year.
