The locations at which staff are based can be identified but it cannot be determined how many of them provide treatment in the hospitals and how many provide treatment in the community using the hospital as a base. Equally staff not providing treatment may be based in hospitals but work in support of those involved in treatment in the community.
As at 30 September 1990 there were 141,888 employed in the NHS in Scotland. This equates to 118,025.2 whole-time equivalent staff of whom 82,721.4 were involved in treatment and 35,303.8 were support staff. The latter category includes administrative and clerical, catering, laundry, domestic, portering, maintenance and works staff.
