To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he will give the number of police officers in Leicestershire for each year since 1979, including 1991–92; and when he plans to make a decision on the number of police officers for 1992–93.

The Leicestershire police authority has applied for an additional 27 police posts for 1991–93. Its application will be carefully considered, with advice from HM inspector of constabulary, together with applications from other police authorities. My right hon. Friend aims to announce his decision in late autumn.
