To ask the Secretary of State for Health what is the average cost of a kidney transplant operation; who bears the cost; and what part of it is made up of booking the operating theatre.

The average annual cost of a kidney transplantation in the year of operation is around £10,000. For NHS patients the cost is borne by the health authority responsible for the care of the patient. The cost of booking the operating theatre is not separately identifiable.
