Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Employment if will list by district the total number of inspectors employed by the Health and Safety Excutive in each year since 1986–87.

Mr. Forth

Health and Safety Executive's field inspectors are based in network of area offices, with the exception of mines inspectors who are organised by districts. The available information for the 1 April each year is given in

  • Table A—Inspectors based in Areas;
  • Table B—Inspectors based in Districts;
  • Table C—Inspectors HQ-based.

Notes:

1. Figures include factory, agriculture and specialist inspectors based at field consultant groups for all years.

2. 1986 figures also include field-based industrial air pollution inspectors.

3. 1990 and 1991 figures include field-based quarries inspectors who transferred to the factory and agricultural division in October 1989.

4. 1991 figures include field-based railway inspectors following the transfer of the Railway Inspectorate from the Department of Transport in December 1990.

Notes:

1. Pre 1990 figures are for field-based Mines and Quarries Inspectors.

2. Figures for 1990 and 1991 are for Mines Inspectors only, following the transfer of the Quarries Inspectorate to the Factory and Agricultural Division in October 1989.

3. The table shows that the Scottish and North Eastern and Western and South Eastern District offices amalgamated. District boundaries were also changed.

Notes:

2. Nuclear Installations Inspectors are HQ-based. Their site inspections and visits are organised and carried out from HQ.

3. Offshore Safety inspectors are based at HQ buildings and at Aberdeen and Great Yarmouth.
