HC Deb 10 June 1991 vol 192 c397W
Mr. Ieuan Wyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what total amount of family credit was paid to farmers in England and Wales during the last year for which figures are available.

Mr. Jack

Separate information about farmers is not available. We estimate that in 1989–90 the total amount of family credit paid to families in England and Wales where the main earner was in "farming, fisheries and related occupations" was around £12 million, out of total expenditure on family credit in Great Britain for that year of £425 million.

1984. Mr. Ieuan Wyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what is the total number of farmers currently claiming family credit in England and Wales; and what were the equivalent numbers for(a) 1979 and (b)

Mr. Jack

Separate information about farmers is not available. As at 31 October 1990, the latest date for which comprehensive information is available, there were 8,980 families in England and Wales receiving family credit where the main earner was in "farming, fisheries and related occupation". Equivalent information is not available for 1984 and 1979, since the occupational classifications used for family income supplement statistics were on a different basis.
