To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how much the Scottish Office spent on the promotion of the Scottish horticultural industry in each year since 1980; and if he will make a statement.

The Scottish Office Agriculture and Fisheries Department has a general sponsoring role in relation to the Scottish horticultural industry. This is discharged in a variety of ways and detailed costs are not held centrally.

The Department funds research and development on horticulture at the Scottish Crop Research Institute, Dundee. Since 1981–92, expenditure has been as follows:
