HL Deb 04 June 1991 vol 529 cc39-40WA
Lord Dormand of Easington

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many schools have applied for grant-maintained status, how many have been given such status, and how many are eligible to apply.

Baroness Blatch:

My right honourable friend the Secretary of State for Education and Science has received applications for grant-maintained status from 141 schools. A further 34 applications are awaited following ballots in favour of seeking GM status.

Of the 141 applications, the Secretary of State has approved 77 and is minded to approve a further two. Thirteen applications have been rejected and 49 have yet to be decided.

There are some 23,000 maintained primary and secondary schools in England. All are eligible to apply for GM status.
