To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what were the total numbers of full-time and part-time employees in each local authority in Scotland, and the gross totals, broken down by category, in 1979 and in the latest year for which figures are available.

Quarterly figures for local authority staffing have been published jointly by the Scottish Office and the Convention of Scottish Local Authorities since 1976 and are available in the Library. Prior to 1981, figures for individual local authorities were not held centrally.
