Mr. Straw

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science what is his estimate of the total number of teachers employed on a permanent basis in maintained schools in England in 1990–91 with comparable figures for each of the past 12 years.

Figures for teachers employed on a permanent basis cannot be separately identified. The table gives the total number of teachers—full-time equivalents—employed for one month and more in local education authority maintained and grant-maintained nursery, primary and secondary schools 1979–91.
