HC Deb 24 July 1991 vol 195 c591W
Mr. Ward

To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department if he has any plans to review the jury system.

Mr. Kenneth Baker

I refer my hon. Friend to the reply given by my hon. Friend the Minister of State to a question from my hon. Friend the Member for Warrington, South (Mr. Butler) on 8 July at column249.

Division 1 Division 2 Division 3 Division 4 Total
Attendance
1990–91 8,605,006 6,279,173 2,521,497 1,621,714 19,027,390
1989–90 7,878,132 6,842,661 2,789,315 1,850,086 19,360,194
Increase/decrease (per cent.) + 9 –8 –10 –12 —2
Arrests
1990–91 1,747 1,710 411 251 4,119
1989–90 1,857 2,203 1,151 734 5,945
Increase/decrease (per cent.) -6 -22 -64 -66 -31
Ejections
1990–91 2,822 1,713 296 239 5,070
1989–90 3,318 2,707 574 374 6,973
Increase/decrease (per cent.) –15 –37 –48 –36 27

These figures indicate that, while in 1990–91 attendances remained broadly at the same level as the previous year, the numbers of arrests and ejections fell by 31 and 27 per cent. respectively. This represents a most welcome fall in the level of trouble at football matches. The additional information requested by the hon. Member is voluminous. I shall write to him with it shortly.
