§ Mrs. Virginia BottomleyThe Human Fertilisation and Embryology Authority has a range of statutory responsibilities and functions which were placed on it by Parliament. In order for the Human Fertilisation Embryology Authority to carry out these duties it has been estimated that its first full year running costs (1992–93) will be approximately £1.17 million. The major items of cost are expected to be:
£ Staff costs 456,000 Accommodation 171,000 Meetings of the authority, licensing committee and other committees 136,000 Inspection visits (to infertility treatment and research centres) 158,000 Information register (computer costs) 42,000 Stationery, printing, telephone and postage 57,000 Other costs (legal and accountancy advice, training, equipment, conferences, capital costs, etc.) 150,000
