HC Deb 23 July 1991 vol 195 c509W
Mr. Simon Hughes

To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland if he will list how many tonnes of(a) sulphur dioxide, (b) nitrogen oxides and (c) particulate carbon, were discharged into the atmosphere in Scotland during the latest year for which figures are available.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton

The most recent available figures for Scotland are for 1986 and are as follows:

Kilotonnes
Sulphur dioxide 332
Nitrogen oxides 186
Smoke (as a product of coal combustion) 31

However, maps showing emissions of sulphur dioxides and nitrogen oxides by 20 km grid square in Scotland for 1987 were published in October 1990 by the review group on acid rain and by the photochemical oxidants review group. Copies of these publications have been deposited in the Library of the House.
