To ask the Secretary of State for Defence what proportion of the 1991–92 allocation of £2,441 million targeted for research and development under section 2.3, page 10, of the "Statement on the Defence Estimates, 1991, Volume 2" (Cm. 1559-II), is intended for research into the verification of a nuclear test ban.

Government expenditure on unclassified work in relation to verification amounts to less than one tenth of I per cent. of the total R and D budget. The Government also undertake some classified work in related areas, details of which cannot be revealed on grounds of national security.
