HC Deb 18 July 1991 vol 195 cc273-4W
Mr. Page

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how long ago the RTM 322 engine successfully completed its trials with the United States navy.

Mr. Alan Clark

I understand that the US navy completed flight trials of RTM 322 in a Seahawk helicopter in September 1988.

Mr. Page

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how many RTM 322 engines have been ordered to date by the Government.

Mr. Alan Clark

The RTM 322 engine has been selected to power the production model of the RN EH101 Merlin helicopter, orders for which have not yet been placed. We are currently evaluating bids for the prime contractorship for this project.

Mr. Page

To ask the Secretary of State for Defence how much financial support the Government have given to develop the RTM 322; and how much that is of the development total.

Mr. Alan Clark

The RTM 322 development work is shared in roughly equal proportions between the United Kingdom and France. The British Government are contributing about one third of the cost of the United Kingdom work share. The precise sum is commercially confidential.
