HC Deb 11 July 1991 vol 194 cc453-4W
Mr. Robin Cook

To ask the Secretary of State for Health how many young chronic sick and disabled units have closed in the past five years.

Mr. Dorrell

Our figures show the number of units recording patient activity, not the number of units closed.

Mr. Robin Cook

To ask the Secretary of State for Health if he will list the number of people cared for in young chronic sick and disabled units for each year since 1980.

Mr. Dorrell

The available information is given in the table. The figures from 1980 to 1986 refer to deaths and discharges from units for younger physically disabled and spinal injury units. The information for 1988–89 and 1989–90 is the estimated number of finished ward stays of patients in these units. The figures are not directly comparable.
