HC Deb 10 July 1991 vol 194 cc401-2W
Mr. Devlin

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will make it his policy to establish further city technology colleges in Stockton, Middlesbrough and Hartlepool.

Mr. Eggar

My right hon. and learned Friend has no current plans for the establishment of further city technology colleges in Stockton, Middlesbrough or Hartlepool. However, he would be willing to consider such proposals on their merits. In the meantime Macmillan college Teesside provides an excellent example of the benefits of a CTC education for pupils in Cleveland.

Mr. Devlin

To ask the Secretary of State for Education and Science if he will consider alternative methods by which schools applying for grant-maintained status may become city technology colleges.

Mr. Eggar

As my right hon. Friend the Prime Minister announced on 3 July, we intend to create a new kind of school by enabling existing LEA-maintained and grant-maintained schools to apply to become grant-maintained technology schools and colleges. These will incorporate the key characteristics of city technology colleges. They will focus on technology in relation to any area of the curriculum and receive financial support from private sector sponsors.
