asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many asylum-seekers have been detained (a) in prison; (b) in detention centres, in each of the last three years; and how many such persons are currently held.

As at 18th June 1991 305 people detained under Immigration Act powers had sought asylum. About 80 were in immigration service accommodation and most of the rest were in prisons, including Haslar. The other information requested is not available centrally and could be obtained only at disproportionate cost.
