HC Deb 01 July 1991 vol 194 cc13-4W
Mr. David Marshall

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport if he will give details of his plans to monitor the effectiveness of compulsory rear seat belt wearing for adults which comes into effect on 1 July.

Mr. Chope

The roadside surveys of seat belt wearing carried out at six-monthly intervals by the Transport and Road Research Laboratory will monitor the change in wearing rates following introduction of the new law. In addition, the quarterly analysis by my Department of data from the road accident report forms completed by the police will reveal how effective the new law has been in reducing the number and severity of casualties among rear seat passengers.
