To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment what information he possesses concerning the current rates of discharge of the pesticide pentachlorophenol to the environment; and what are the primary sources of these discharges.

[holding answer 27 June 1991]: Results of monitoring for pentachlorophenol are compiled by the National Rivers Authority and returned annually by my Department to the European Commission. These results are also held on the National Rivers Authority's public

registers. Discharges containing pentachlorophenol occur mainly in the north-west and Yorkshire National Rivers Authority regions where pentachlorophenol has been applied as a rot-proofing agent in cloth used by textile finishing companies.
