HL Deb 31 January 1991 vol 525 c33WA
Baroness Ewart-Biggs

asked Her Majesty's Government:

What proportion of defendants commit further offences while on bail, and what is the offending rate of tagged defendants on bail.

Lord Reay

The rate of offending on bail of defendants who took part in the electronic monitoring trials (which was reported in Home Office Research Study 120 published on 23rd November 1990) was 22 per cent. Information is not recorded centrally on the number of defendants in general who commit further offences while on bail, but the available information from two studies based on 1988 data points to a reoffending rate at about the same level.
