§ Lord Holme of Cheltenhamasked Her Majesty's Government:
What their policy is towards South Africans who refuse to answer army call-ups or desert, and who seek asylum in the United Kingdom; and whether they have any plans to change this policy.
§ Lord ReayAll applications for asylum are considered under the terms of the 1951 United Nations Convention on Refugees. The outcome of such consideration depends on the merits of each individual's case. Evasion of military service is not in itself grounds for asylum but may be so in individual cases of conscientious objection. There are no plans to change this policy.
