HL Deb 28 January 1991 vol 525 c19WA
Lord Dormand of Easington

asked Her Majesty's Government:

How many schools have applied for grant-maintained status, how many schools have been given such status, and how many are eligible to apply.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of the Environment (Baroness Blatch)

My right honourable Friend the Secretary of State for Education and Science has received GM applications from 87 schools. A further 11 applications are awaited following ballots in favour of seeking GM status.

Of the 87 applications, 58 have been approved and the Secretary of State is minded to approve a further two. Twelve have been rejected and 15 have yet to be decided.

In England there are 23,000 maintained primary and secondary schools. All are eligible to apply for GM status.
