HL Deb 28 January 1991 vol 525 cc18-9WA
Baroness Faithful

asked Her Majesty's Government:

Whether as reported in The Times on 3rd January 1991, it is their policy that "councils should give up their social work role"; and if so, who is to carry out the many statutory duties laid on the social services departments in connection with the Children Act 1989, the Mental Health Act, the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act and other statutes dealing with children and families.

The Parliamentary Under-Secretary of State, Department of Health (Baroness Hooper)

There was no mention inThe Times that "councils should give up their social work role" nor was this stated in the article written by my right honourable friend the Minister of State at the Home Office.
