§ Mr. DorrellInformation on numbers of operations planned is not held centrally. Statistics of operations carried out are collected for full financial years and those for the current year are not, therefore, yet available.
In the year ending March 1989 an estimated 3.27 million operations were performed in NHS hospitals in England, of which an estimated 57,000 were heart operations.
