HC Deb 28 February 1991 vol 186 c548W
Mr. Ieuan Wyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport whether he has any plans to undertake a study on the safety aspects of the size and weight of heavy and lengthy vehicles on the road infrastructure.

Mr. Chope

I have no plans to institute a new study specifically on this subject.

Mr. Ieuan Wyn Jones

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport whether he has any plans to introduce regulations to require heavy vehicles and trailers to be fitted with effective spray guards.

Mr. Chope

Regulations were introduced in 1984 in the United Kingdom requiring all new heavy motor vehicles and trailers to be fitted with spray suppression devices complying with BS AU200. The Council of Ministers ha.s now agreed a European Community directive on spray suppression closely modelled on our existing requirements in the UK. But the minimum efficiency required has been raised compared with that required in 1984, reflecting improvements in spray suppression technology.
