To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer what has been the real growth in the British economy since 1979; and what was the comparable figure for the previous five-year period.

Based on preliminary estimates for the fourth quarter of 1990, GDP increased by a total of 25 per cent. between 1979 and 1990. Between 1974 and 1979, output rose by a total of 10½ per cent.
