HC Deb 27 February 1991 vol 186 c509W
Mr. Hume

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what is the volume of hazardous waste generated in Northern Ireland; what substances are involved; where are the processing units of their source and the respective amounts.

Mr. Needham

Hazardous waste is, with some exceptions, "special waste" as defined in the Pollution Control (Special Waste) Regulations (Northern Ireland) 1981. The volume of such waste generated in the Province is estimated at 8,000 tonnes. Special waste includes solvent residues, galvanising acids, asbestos, contaminated sludges, insecticides and pesticides and electro-plating and textile dye wastes. The main procedures are located in the Belfast and Londonderry areas and include companies such as Shorts, Harland and Wolff, James Mackie Textiles, Du Pont (UK) Ltd. and GEC Engineering. The respective amounts of special waste generated by these firms are not collated individually.

Mr. Hume

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what consideration the IDB and DED has given to the potential of a hazardous waste incinerator in Northern Ireland in attracting further industries which generate hazardous waste.

Mr. Needham

None.

Mr. Hume

To ask the Secretary of State for Northern Ireland what weight is given to the views of district council environmental health departments or health and social services board public health directors in deciding on the construction or siting of a hazardous waste incinerator in Northern Ireland.

Mr. Needham

Such views would be taken fully into account in the determination by the Department of Environment for Northern Ireland of any planning application for such a proposal.
